These are an interesting collectible that you will sooner or later come across in South Australia while metal detecting. I found my first tag in 2017 and since then have picked them up in different locations across the state.

The history of the South Australian dog registration act begins with the Dog Act of 1860 which came into force in 1861 and required all dog owners to register their dogs with the local District council. In 1867 a revision of the act added new district numbers for cities and towns, and required the dog to wear a collar stamped with the district and registration number. An annual fee of 5 shillings was also required to be paid by the dog’s owner.

Another amendment to the Dog Act in 1884 required District registrars to supply a metal tag for each registered dog stamped with the district and registration number. The first dog registration tags were issued for 1885 – 1886. Female dogs had a second hole punched in the tag.
