Frederick Joyce established a percussion cap factory in London in 1820. Due to its success, a larger factory was built in Waltham Abbey, Essex in 1842. As breech-loading pinfire and center-fire cartridges became popular around 1860, the company started to manufacture them. In 1908 the company was purchased by Nobel Explosives Ltd and a larger plant was built at the same location. In 1910 the Joyce name and factory was purchased by Eley.
